In a significant advancement in Iran’s defense capabilities, the unveiling of two new air defense missile systems, Arman (Aspiration) and Azarakhsh (Thunderbolt), marks the completion of an already formidable multi-layered air defense arsenal.

At a ceremony held in Tehran and attended by Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Ashtiani, Iran’s defense ministry introduced these two advanced systems, underscoring the nation’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities.

Arman System

Named after Arman Alivardi, a young Iranian who tragically lost his life to West-backed armed rioters in Tehran, the Arman system represents a tactical anti-ballistic system with impressive capabilities.

First showcased in 2022 during the Islamic Republic of Iran Army Day military parade, Arman boasts the ability to detect and track up to 24 targets within a range of 180 kilometers. It can simultaneously engage six to 12 targets within a range of 120 kilometers.

The system is equipped with phased array radars, including both passive and active variants, enabling comprehensive target tracking, including fighters, cruise missiles, helicopters, drones, and short-range ballistic missiles.

Notable features of the Arman system include its rapid deployment capability, activation within three minutes, and a reaction time of less than 20 seconds. Its transporter erector launcher and radar (TELAR) facilitate vertical launch, enabling swift response to threats from various directions without the need to reposition the launcher.

Arman’s armament includes the Sayad-2 missile with a range of 70 km, the Sayad-3 missile with a range of 120 km, and an improved version of the Sayad-3 with a range of 150 kilometers.

Azarakhsh System

The Azarakhsh system serves as a low-range, low-altitude defense system utilizing radar and electro-optical systems for target detection and tracking.

Equipped with an advanced 3D radar system and optical tracking system, Azarakhsh can detect and neutralize hostile targets within a range of 50 kilometers, employing thermal seekers for enhanced accuracy. Characterized by its lightweight and portable design, Azarakhsh can be mounted on various vehicles, making it versatile for defending vital infrastructure from drone attacks.

Azarakhsh strengthens Iran’s ability to counter aerial threats, complementing systems like Mersad and Kamin-2. Arman and Azarakhsh mark a substantial advancement in Iran’s defense, emphasizing its dedication to protecting airspace and assets.
